My husband is a do-it-yourself kind of guy, and this is great for many reasons. For one, things get done around the house. I noticed this when were first married. It was about 10:00 pm at night, and I noticed that something needed doing in the bathroom. I made a comment that we should do that soon, and he said, "how about right now." I was very impressed! My Dad takes forever to get things done. And,no, it was not just because we were newly weds, things still get done quickly and competently.

The second great thing about marrying a DIY kind of guy, is that you always know what to get him for birthdays and Christmas, a power tool. Originally, it was basic, corded power tools, then it was cordless tools that he preferred. Then, for an outdoor project (building a fence), he got a portable air compressor and a nail gun (we call it a ka-chinker) and it was great! From then on, new tools had to be air tools.

Now, as I learned about air tools, I discovered many advantages to using one with a portable air compressor.

  1. They are a good value. Though you have to put out some money for the portable air compressor, often air tools (or pneumatic tools) are less expensive than cordless or corded power tools. Also, pneumatic tools often last longer because they do not have a small motor that can burn out. Instead, they are drawing their power from the larger motor of the air compressor.
  2. Mentioning above that air tools do not have their own motors, brings up another advantage. No motor means they weigh less. Though tools are often used by big, strong men, more can get done more comfortably if the tool is smaller and lighter, it makes the tool easier to handle, allowing for better efficiency.
  3. Since pneumatic tools draws on the larger motor of the portable air compressor, they can deliver more torque and higher revolutions per minute than their electric counterparts. This allows your do-it-yourselfer to work more quickly and effectively.

Portable Air Compressor to the Rescue

Last week I decided to help my Dad power wash the cedar siding on his house. It has been about 15 years since it was last done, and it was really showing signs of needing help. The mold and darkened surface was significant. Anyway, I decided to use a regular gasoline power washer to clean the wood. It worked like a charm, and before lone, the job was done and sitting there dry. Since it needs some time to fully dry out before applying stain, I had some time to consider how I wanted to apply it. Of course, brushing is probably the very best way to really get the stain into the wood, but I was also interested in saving a little time. I preferred to just use a sprayer to apply the stain. My search soon revealed that a portable air compressor was something I would "need". Funny how our wants and needs intersect at times, isn't it?

I found a nice air powered air gun at a local hardware store. At first it seemed just perfect. I was about to buy it when I noticed on the little description card that it was not recommended to be used with a compressor smaller than 6 gallons. Dang! The portable air compressor I had was only a small 2 gallon pancake compressor. That just wouldn't cut it. I had to buy a larger unit so that I could get the gun, so that I could finish the house project. See how this goes.

I looked over my options and soon settled on a 20 gallon portable air compressor that would not only adequately run this particular tool, but would also serve my needs going forward. You never know what use you might find for such a great machine. Being able to power up and use tools with pressurized air is clean, efficient, powerful, and fun.

I returned to the job site with my new goodies and soon discovered that I had indeed made the right choice. The compressor started right up and was soon pressurized and ready to go. I hooked up the hose and gun, filled the reservoir with stain, and started systematically applying it to the siding. The portable air compressor was on wheels, and easy to maneuver. I could see the dry wood soaking up the stain and I was happy I'd opted for this method of application. I dreaded the idea of having to brush stain on for hours on end. Once I had the first coat on I let it set for a couple hours while I took a break, then went back out and applied a second coat. This probably would have been sufficient, but I had read that the very best thing to do when applying stain with a sprayer is to go back and brush over the job. Doing this really drove the stain into the wood and allowed it to fill every little pore.

A portable air compressor is what made this job not only possible, but also enjoyable and satisfying as well. Who knows when I might use it again. I am, however, glad that I have what I need now to do all sorts of jobs I couldn't do before.

How Portable Air Compressors Work

There are many portable air compressors on the market today of varying sizes and power. And though they vary by size and power, they all work on just a couple of different technologies to generate air pressure.

Most air compressors work by what's called positive displacement. This is different from compressors that use rotating impellers to generate air pressure. Instead, air pressure is increased by reducing the size of the space that contains the air. Usually, this is done with a reciprocating piston.

Like a small internal combustion engine, a conventional piston compressor has a crankshaft, a connecting rod and piston, a cylinder and a valve head. The crankshaft is driven by either an electric motor or a gas engine. While there are small models that are comprised of just the pump and motor, most portable air compressors have an air tank to hold a quantity of air within a preset pressure range. The compressed air in the tank drives the air tools, and the motor turns on and off to automatically maintain pressure in the tank.

At the top of the cylinder, there is a valve head that holds the inlet and discharge valves. Both are simply thin metal flaps, one mounted underneath and one mounted on top of the valve plate. As the piston moves down, a vacuum is created above it. This allows outside air at atmospheric pressure to push open the inlet valve and fill the area above the piston. As the piston moves up, the air above it compresses, holds the inlet valve shut and pushes the discharge valve open. The air moves from the discharge port to the tank. With each stroke, more air enters the tank and the pressure rises.

Portable air compressors use a pressure switch to stop the motor when tank pressure reaches a preset limit, about 125 psi for many single-stage models. Most of the time, though, that much pressure isn't needed. Therefore, the air line will include a regulator that is set to match the pressure requirements of the tool being used. A gauge before the regulator monitors tank pressure and a gauge after the regulator monitors air-line pressure. In addition, the tank has a safety valve that opens if the pressure switch malfunctions. The pressure switch may also incorporate an unloader valve that reduces tank pressure when the compressor is turned off.

Many articulated-piston compressors are oil lubricated. The pistons have rings that help keep the compressed air on top of the piston and keep the lubricating oil away from the air. Rings, though, are not completely effective, so some oil will enter the compressed air in aerosol form. Having oil in the air isn't necessarily a problem. Many air tools require oiling, and inline oilers are often added to increase a uniform supply to the tool.

On the negative side, these models require regular oil checks, periodic oil changes and they must be operated on a level surface. While solutions to the airborne oil problem include using an oil separator or filter in the air line, a better idea is to use an oil free portable air compressor that uses permanently lubricated bearings in place of the oil bath.

Though many portable air compressors are similar, this should help you to understand some of the mechanical differences of the various types available.

The pistons inside the cylinders that compress the air generate heat due to friction and this heat causes additional wear and tear. You should only have to replace the oil once or twice a year, or if the synthetic oil turns brown. The oil as well as lubricating helps the pump to operate cooler which will help it to operate a lot more dependably.

When you're a do-it-yourself guy like I am, a portable air compressor is really a clear necessity.  After I began doing projects, a lot of the tools I aquired were cordless or cord connected pneumatically-driven tools.

Several years back I got myself my first small compressor and among the first projects I performed with it was constructing a new gate.  I put to use a nail gun coupled to the processor and I was sold.

There she is stranded alone in the parking lot. Two small children press their noses up against the cold December glass. They're wondering why Mommy is so upset and why they haven't started home.

Does this sound familiar to you? It happened to my wife once. It was really frustrating for both of us. I was out of town on business and we had just recently moved to the area and had no one to call.

Fortunately a good Samaritan came by and helped her. She had one of those portable air compressor and battery charger units in her trunk. She went straight to my wife's car connected the clamps to the terminals and my wife's car started right up.
